We take a deep breath and check to see if we have everything on hand for the duration of our trip: Book? I have it. Glasses? Cheque. A pencil to underline or take notes? Cheque. For those of us who are less fortunate, and not in first class on trains and planes, a bottle of water is essential. We are ready to go.
Recently, this was the scene when he was about to embark on a journey by train 3.5 hours from Seattle to Vancouver, Washington. The journey takes me along the Hood Canal and a certain day the scenery is spectacular. On this trip, my time was such that he would be able to watch the sunset over the canal. What a special gift! He had not yet withdrawn from the station, when a young woman in the seat in front of me began a phone conversation. I could hear every word, however, convinced me that he was just making a quick call to tell his dad that everything was ready for the trip.
